SLP Wealth (affiliated with Student Loan Planner) is continuing to grow its financial planning business and seeks a detail-oriented Tax Associate to provide crucial support to our tax team. As our business expands, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of our tax services by handling essential tax organization and preparation functions.

We are looking to hire a Tax Associate who is working towards becoming a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or EA (Enrolled Agent), or preferably already hold one of these credentials. This job involves completely remote/virtual so you can work from anywhere as long as you have a working computer and good internet connection. This is an independent contractor position for someone with M-F availability, 5 days per week during regular business hours, and potentially more availability as needed on a seasonal basis during tax season.

The Tax Associate will work with our tax team to support clients provided by SLP Wealth. This role may also be asked to complete various admin tasks as common for tax planning, tax strategy, tax preparation/reviewing, and filing related duties. 

SLP Wealth is looking for a candidate who understands student loans, taxes, including MFS versus MFJ comparisons, community property splits, and general tax planning. We are also hoping to find someone who is willing and wanting to take on additional responsibilities in these areas in the future. Our target market is helping high-debt student loan borrowers, in professions such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, law and education to reduce their student loan debt and tax burden so they can grow wealth and reduce their stress.

Responsibilities: 

1. Tax Preparation & Review Support
  • Prepare approximately 50-100 individual tax returns (primarily high-income professionals: physicians, dentists, etc.)
  • Review client documents for completeness and accuracy
  • Identify missing information and follow up with clients or internal team
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state tax laws
2. Tax Planning Support
  • Assist in building tax projections (especially around AGI-sensitive strategies)
  • Model scenarios like:
    • MFJ vs MFS (critical for IDR strategies)
    • Retirement contributions (401k, Backdoor Roth, etc.)
    • Timing of income and deductions
  • Flag opportunities to reduce taxable income
3. Client Communication & Support
  • Communicate clearly with clients on:
    • Tax document requests
    • Return status updates
    • Basic tax questions (non-advisory unless licensed/approved)
  • Support client follow-ups with tax-related insights
4. Data Gathering & Organization
  • Collect and organize client financial data (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, etc.)
  • Maintain clean, structured client files in Google Drive/CRM
  • Ensure data flows correctly into ProConnect, our tax prep software
5. Internal Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with:
    • Tax Managers
    • Financial Planners
  • Provide tax inputs for consults and planning cases
  • Help prep materials for client meetings

An Ideal Candidate Will: 

  • Love both taxes and student loans. This can be shown from reading student loan websites widely, pursuing advanced credentials, or having already acquired a working understanding of how taxes affect student loan programs and how they operate.
  • Have strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail. Be reliable and have a proactive approach to tasks.
  • Familiarity with tax processes or financial services is a plus, but not required.
  • Have a high degree of professionalism. Clients pay us a high fee for our services, and they expect good audio quality, video conferencing experience, no background distractions, etc. 
  • Candidates should be good when working under fixed deadlines, and willing to be autonomous while working in a team environment. Must also be a problem-solver and who gets excited about solving problems, paying attention to detailed numbers and information, and/or how to make processes more efficient. 
  • Prior administrative experience is preferred.
  • See tax savings and minimizing tax burdens as a huge value-add in addition to overall financial planning for those with large amounts of student loans.

Qualifications: 

In addition to the credentials and requirements mentioned above, candidate must be pursuing a CPA or EA credential and also have experience preparing and filing at least 50 personal tax returns. They must also have an understanding of student loans and tax implications for student loans.

Expectations: 

This is an independent contract role for someone with M-F availability, 5 days per week during regular business hours, and potentially more availability as needed on a seasonal basis during tax season, to do tax strategy, and tax filing.
